What you should eat during pregnancy is very important because good nutrition is always vital, but more so when you are pregnant, both for you and for your baby. If you eat a well-balanced and healthy diet during your pregnancy your baby's brain, organs and entire body will do much better.

In fact, your diet is the the only way your baby gets the vitamins, minerals and all nutrients needed to grow. So your diet has a direct affect on your baby. A healthy diet will also help keep you healthy and full of energy during your pregnancy and even during labor. There have been studies done showing that the foods a mother eats during pregnancy can affect that baby for the rest of its life. A well balanced diet is that important.

Your baby grows continually, so every meal you have affects it.

Keep in mind that your body is working harder than usual during pregnancy and childbirth. Also you are providing all your baby's nutrient needs, including calcium and phosphorus for strong bones.

Your body needs more iron and folic acid because you must provide more blood to circulate through the placenta.

During Pregnancy, What Should You Eat?

You need a bare minimum of 5 servings of vegetables per day. That is 1/2 cup cooked vegetables or 1/2 cup raw vegetables or 1 cup of leafy vegetables per serving.

Those vegetables should include potatoes, green leafy vegetables, broccoli, cabbage, peas, dark yellow vegetables, carrots, green beans, squash, tomatoes, etc. The fresher the better, and raw vegetables are better for you thank cooked.

You also need at least 3 servings of fruits per day. Be sure to include citrus, apples, pears, grapes, bananas, the bigger the variety the better. A serving size is 1 apple, pear or orange or 1/2 grapefruit. They provide vitamin c and potassium and help prevent infections.

Avoid empty calories, this usually includes the snacks we all enjoy, but they provide no nutrition for the baby. This means you could be "full" but your baby "starving". Avoid foods with any type of sweetener: sugar, honey, artificial sweeteners. Avoid foods like colas, candy, cookies and sweetened fruit juices. Stay away from donuts, jams, cakes and pies or sweetened cereals.
