Questions if You're Pregnant

You have just found out the wonderful news… you are going to have a baby. You are thrilled, and at the same time, you are scared to death. There are a million questions swirling through your head.

What will being pregnant be like?

What will happen to your body?

Will you gain tons of weight?

Will you get stretch marks?

Will you feel good the whole time?

Will you be one of those crazy moody pregnant ladies?

Is the baby healthy?

Will the baby continue to be healthy?

How will your relationship change at home?

What will happen with your job?

What will being a mother be like?

How will you know what to do?

How will you afford all of this?

Will you be a good parent? How about your partner?

Having a baby is one of those things that happens as a normal occurrence to many of us, and at the same time it is one of those things that we are least prepared to handle and least knowledgeable about before it happens.

So you are probably just like me. The first thing I did, after telling my family, was to read everything I could get my hands on. I wanted to know everything I could about what was happening inside my body. I wanted to know everything I could about the things I could do to make my baby the healthiest possible – what to eat and not eat, what to drink and not drink, what to do, how to exercise.
  • Did I need extra sleep?
  • Are medicines safe to take?
  • How about vitamins?
  • Do I have to be careful about sex?
  • How do I choose the right doctor?
  • Will loud music hurt the baby?
  • How about the normal cleaning products I use? Are they safe?
  • How about cosmetics or dying my hair?
  • Do I want to know the sex?
  • Do I want to have fetal testing done?
  • What if, what if, what if?
And once people find out you are pregnant, it is even worse. Although the chances are really high everything will go just fine, it seems like everyone you talk to has some horror story they are just dying to tell you, and they do… the story about the baby who was born with purple hair, or 6 eyes, or the lady who was pregnant for 2 years. And it is even worse with relatives. Besides the horror stories, they have all kinds of advice that they feel obligated to give you, whether you want it or not…”if you want a boy, stand on your head while reciting humpty dumpty”, “to avoid heart burn, eat ice cream 3 times a day while standing on one foot”, etc.

Even worse yet, for some reason, everyone feels like your body is public property. Once you start to show, prefect strangers walk up to you and put their hands on your pregnant belly, anywhere and anytime.

We could write a series of articles about all kinds of topics to help you: how to choose the right birth method for your situation, should I use cloth diapers, and what is a Doula anyway?
