At the moment you confirm that you are pregnant, the most common thought that goes through your mind is if this little baby is a boy or a girl? And what determines that? At conception, gender is determined by chromosome characteristics from Dad’s sperm, either an X or a Y. Each unfertilized egg carries an X chromosome while the sperm can carry either the X or Y. So if the sperm carrying an X chromosome fertilizes the egg, the baby is a girl and if it’s a Y then the baby is a boy!

Baby Gender

There are many ways couples try to conceive one gender or the other but studies show there are no guarantees that any of these methods work. The most popular though is the Chinese Fertility Chart. This method uses your age and the month that you will conceive to angle for one gender or the other.

Another popular one has to do with your diet. A menu with salty foods, red meat, fish, and beans is said to produce a boy. This diet method also says to avoid acidic foods to create an environment for the boy-bearing sperm to thrive. So, is that suggesting that you would avoid these foods if you are hoping for a girl?

Boy or Girl?

But a method that they say has a 75%-80% chance of success in conceiving a girl is timing intercourse. The X chromosome or the female sperm are bigger and live longer than male sperm, but they are slower. So having intercourse a few days before ovulation will give the female sperm an advantage over the male sperm. Ideally, you want to have intercourse several days before you ovulate.
